Description
Kanchanaburi, Thailand. c. September 1945. The theatre stage built by prisoners of war (POWs) at Kanchanaburi. Built of timber, bamboo and attap palm leaves, it was used for POW entertainment, subject to the whims and moods of the Japanese camp commander. It included an orchestra pit (a hole dug in the foreground) and curtains made from rice sacks. Kanchanaburi is fifty kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or 364 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
