Description
Tamarkan, Thailand. c. September 1945. Close up of a bomb damaged plaque on a Japanese monument erected in memory of those who died during the construction of the Burma-Thailand railway. Situated near the old Tamarkan prisoner of war (POW) camp site, the Japanese used British POWs to contruct the memorial, which was opened with much pomp and ceremony on 21 March 1944. Tamarkan is fifty five kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or five kilometres north of Kanchanaburi. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
