Description
Portrait of NX59496 Private Roland Mushett (Roly) Dean of the 2/19th Battalion, of Duntroon, ACT. At age 21 he enlisted and his unit was sent to Malaya. He was taken prisoner of war (POW) and after being imprisoned at Changi he was sent with a large group of other Australians to Japan on the Kamakura Maru to work first in the shipyards at Kobe while living in Takatorimichi Camp. In 1944-1945 he was a medical orderly, first in Itchioka camp in Osaka, and from early 1945 at Kobe Buen.
