An informal portrait of two Boer leaders who came to prominence during the War in South Africa, 1899-1902. General J P Snyman (left), and General Philip Botha (right). General Snyman served under Assistant Commandant-General Piet Cronje at the Siege of Mafeking and took over the command of the Marico Commando when Cronje left. General Snyman failed to distinguish himself and left Commandant Sarel Eloff without support when the Boers managed to enter the town. General Snyman served at the Battle of Diamond Hill but was reduced to the ranks afterwards. Philip Bpotha is the brother of Louis Botha, commander of the Transvaal forces, emerged from the war to become one of the greatest Boer guerilla leaders. Having failed to win military victory over the British, he entered into peace negotiations in May 1902, which ended the war. Entering politics, in 1910 he was appointed as the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa. Present at the Versailles peace conference in 1919, he died later in the same year.
