Description
Port view of two Bell P-39D Airacobra aircraft in flight, possibly over Australia. Note the American star on the side of the fighter aircraft, and the painted inscription 'Ready to Fire' on the nose. 22 Airacobras from the US Army Air Corps were delivered to the RAAF at the start of 1942, when combat aircraft were in short supply. In the period July 1942 to October 1943, 22 Airacobras were operated by the RAAF, notably in fighting against the Japanese around Port Moresby, New Guinea, before being returned to the US Army Air Force.
