Outdoors portrait of 2472 Private (Pte) William George Copcutt, 12th Battalion, of Hobart Tas. Pte Copcutt, a telegraph linesman in civilian life, enlisted on 28 July 1915 and was taken on strength with the 12th Battalion on 1 March 1916. He was killed at Pozieres on 26 July 1916, aged twenty six. Pte Copcutt was awarded a posthumous Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for taking over the firing of a lewis gun after his team leader had been killed, the machine gun being under a barrage of machine gun, shell and bomb fire. The award was promulgated in the London Gazette on 21 September 1916.
