Informal portrait of 2794392 Recruit (later Sapper) Michael John Wighton, an Aboriginal serviceman (left), and 2794588 Recruit Ross Spencer (right) sitting on the ground holding their self loading rifles (SLR) and with their bum packs, webbing and ammunition pouches strewn on the ground before them, during a training exercise. Both men were in the 21st National Service intake, 1970. Wighton went on to serve with the 17th Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers in South Vietnam between October 1970 and October 1971, and Spencer was posted to the Catering Corps. He was posted to Army Headquarters at Canberra for the remainder of his National Service commitment.
