Description

Studio portrait of 605 Sergeant Ronald Keith Wilson, 40th Battalion from East Devonport, Tasmania. A 21 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 5 March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Corporal with C Company from Hobart on 1 July 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima. Following further training in England, he was promoted to Sergeant and deployed to France in November 1916. He was awarded the French Medaille Militaire for bravery in action at Armentieres on the night of 12/13 April 1917 and was then wounded in action on 7 June 1917. After recovering, he was later promoted to Company Sergeant Major (CSM) and Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) on 9 October 1917. WO2 Wilson was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
