QX6030 Major Frederick Ewen Cameron Loxton (at left), “A” Company Commander of the 2/9th Infantry Battalion and VX69894 Private Charles Robert Layton of the Battalion Intelligence Section attached to “A” Company are pictured at the Company’s Command Post. Within an hour of this photograph being taken Private Layton was wounded by a shell from a Japanese mountain gun and died before reaching the advanced dressing station. (See also photo at 0700015). Major Loxton was killed in action in New Guinea 11 days later on 21 January 1944.
