Description

Neat white crosses mark graves of the men who fell in the Markham and Ramu Valley campaigns. When completed the intention is for this cemetery to be the burial place of all men killed between Kaiapit and Kesawai including members of the 7th Division killed at Shaggy Ridge and in fighting over the Finisterre Range to the Bogadjim road. The crosses are erected and labelled on burial which are replaced with correctly lettered crosses when verified details arrive from the District Records Office. The crosses are then photographed and a print sent to the next-of-kin. When this picture was taken, this cemetery has been established for one month by members of the 19th Graves Registration and Enquiry Unit. In the background is Mount Helwig towering in the Bismarck Range.
