Description
A large crowd of civilians thronged the approaches to the wharf and the adjoining harboursides when HMS Formidable (out of sight) berthed with 1300 members of the Eighth Division returning from Manila. Women and children in the crowd are waving flags and posters and placards bearing the following inscriptions: SID IION NX34543; WELCOME SIG. WAL SKILLICORN, JIM CARR HERE WE ARE, WELCOME ALLAN PO... Identified in the front row are: Alan Ryan (second from left) and Catherine Ayoub (nee Ryan) (third from left), who were awaiting the arrival of their brother NX53153 Private Harry Ryan, one of the many former prisoners of war (POWs) of the Japanese, returning to Australia on the Formidable.
