Portrait of NX270 Sister Freda Mary Eliza Dowdle, a member of the nursing staff of the 2/1st Australian General Hospital. Sister Dowdle of Bondi, NSW, (originally of Narromine, NSW) trained at Auburn Hospital and was a senior sister at time of enlistment. She was among the first contingent of nurses to go to the Middle East on 2 January 1940 with the 2/1st AGH and during her Army career she was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. She later continued her nursing career in Sydney, retiring as the Matron of Bankstown Hospital.
