Description

The "March to Freedom" recruitment march commencing in Dean Street, Albury. It was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 3rd July 1918 that "Extraordinary enthusiasm marked the commencement in Albury today of the March to Freedom, which will occupy about two weeks and will include the principal towns between Albury and Goulburn. Some thousands of people thronged the streets and the recruits received rousing cheers. At noon, 60 volunteers, in charge of Lieutenant T. Byrne and accompanied by Lieutenant McKenzie MC, and Private Jackson VC DCM, arrived by mail train from Sydney. At 3pm, a procession, consisting of soldiers, over 100 women in Red Cross garb and townspeople, marched through the principal streets...eleven recruits were secured".
