Group portrait of prisoners of war in a Turkish camp. Identified back row, third from left is 7501 Leading Stoker (Ldg Sto) Archibald McCullough Wilson. Ldg Sto Wilson was born in Oamaru, New Zealand, and immigrated to Australia where he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1913. He trained as a submariner in London before being attached to the crew of the AE2 at the outbreak of the First World War. Upon posting to the Dardanelles with the AE2, Ldg Sto Wilson was re-assigned to the British E Class submarine HMS E7. He was aboard the E7 when it was caught in Turkish anti-submarine nets at Nagara Point and forced to surface. The company of the E7 were subsequently taken prisoner and held at a Turkish camp. This photograph was forwarded to relatives of Ldg Sto Wilson by the Red Cross. The identity of the other servicemen is not known, they are possibly crew members of the AE2 and/or the E7.
