Portrait of 2785 Sergeant (Sgt) Jack Lovett Mason MM, 46th Battalion. Sgt Mason enlisted with the rank of Private in May 1916, and embarked later that year with the 6th Reinforcements, 46th Battalion, aboard HMAT Port Lincoln (A17). In September 1917 he was appointed to the rank of Corporal (Cpl). Cpl Mason was awarded a Military Medal for his involvement in an attack on 8 August 1918, east of Hamel during the Third Battle of the Somme. His citation for this award reads: "For conspicuous gallantry and leadership during the attack East of Hamel (E of Corbie) on 8th August 1918. This N.C.O. was on the right flank of his Company and it was owing to his very fine leadership that his Company maintained its direction. When the Battalion on our right was held up he pushed forward his section with great dash and brought fire to bear on the enemy thus enabling the line to advance. His courage and coolness throughout the operation was a very fine example to all." Following this award he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt Mason returned to Australia on 5 September 1919.
