Description
The burnt out wreck of a store ship sent from Germany with supplies for German forces in East Africa. The supply ship, blockade breaker Rubens, a British steamer impounded in Hamburg and renamed the Kronborg, was intercepted by HMS Hyacinth in Mansa Bay in German East Africa and set on fire by shellfire. The Hyacinth and HMAS Pioneer were in the area as part of a blockade on the German cruiser SMS Konigsberg which had taken shelter in the Rufigi River south of Dar es Salaam. SMS Konigsberg was eventually destroyed on 12 July 1915 by the combined gun fire of monitors HMS Severn, HMS Mersey, the light cruiser HMS Pyramus and HMAS Pioneer.
