Description
A row of spherical barrage balloons used for suspending aerial nets to protect the city against enemy air raids. Note the airship hangar in the background. The photograph was taken from HMAS Huon while she was in the harbour. Brindisi was the base for the Allied fleet that patrolled the Adriatic Sea for enemy submarines and other vessels based in Austrian controlled ports; the six Australian destroyers were based there between October 1917 and October 1918.
