Near Grand Priel, France. 18 September 1918. Men of the 15th Battalion digging in on their second objective near Grand Priel, in the old British line at Ewe Post, during the attack on the fortified Hindenburg Outpost Line, near Le Verguier. This attack engaging the 1st and 4th Divisions in the centre of the whole onslaught, though made through heavy rains and mist, was considered by them to have been the `cleanest, cheapest, most decisive fight in the whole war', and at its conclusion on the evening of 18 September, the Australians had advanced over about three miles of country and were established on a ridge looking down upon the famous Hindenburg Main Defences. Identified foreground to background are: 7763 Private (Pte) A. D. Smith; 7790 Pte Samuel George Comollatti; unidentified.
