Description
Crews of Australian Centurion tanks from C Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment, engage targets during night firing training at Puckapunyal. The Squadron departed for Vietnam in December 1970.
Those watching can be seen outlined on the top of the turret. The person sitting on the left is the safety officer, and on the right is the crew commander.
The beam from a tank searchlight illuminating targets is seen shining left to centre. The trail in the air (top right to centre) is possibly that of a Carl Gustaf illumination round. The ‘fireworks’ effect is caused by .30 calibre rounds from the tanks’ coaxial machine guns, ricocheting after striking the targets.
