Description
Studio portrait of 6708 Private (Pte) Clarence James Andrews, 12th Battalion from George Town Tasmania. A 20 year old sailor serving with the 92nd Infantry Militia, prior to enlisting in the AIF on 18 April 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 22nd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Palermo (A56) on 30 September 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in December and was killed in action near Boursiers sometime between 6 and 10 April 1917. He was buried near where he fell but his grave could not be located after the war and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
