Description
Studio portrait of 995 Sergeant (Sgt) Charles Edmund Perriam Arthur, 5th Battery, 2nd Brigade, Australian Field Artillery (AFA) from Brighton, Victoria. A 19 year old butcher serving with the 30th Battery AFA Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 17 August 1914, he embarked for overseas service as a Sergeant with No 5 Battery from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 20 October 1914. After disembarking in Egypt and undergoing further training, he landed at Gallipoli on 25 April and was later killed in action on 11 May 1915. Sgt Arthur is buried in Beach Cemetery at the southern end of Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother was 3756 Private Thomas Perriam Arthur who died of wounds in France on 29 August 1916 [see image H06025].
