Studio portrait of 33 Corporal (Cpl) John William Atkinson, 32nd Battalion from Eden Valley, South Australia. A 32 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 21 July 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with A Company from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong. After proceeding to France in June 1916, he was promoted to Lance Corporal in September, then Corporal on 10 October 1916. He received a gunshot wound to the shoulder a fortnight later and returned to duty but in January was back in hospital, this time with scabies. He returned to his unit on 8 March but was again wounded by gunshot wounds to head and scrotum and died of these wounds on 9 March 1917. Cpl Atkinson is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
