Studio portrait of 4432 Private (Pte) Victor John Backhouse, 54th Battalion from Curran Creek via Braidwood, NSW. A 19 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 9 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 14th Reinforcements of the 13th Battalion from Sydney on 16 February 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. Following further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 54th Battalion and joined the battalion in the field in France where he was killed in action at Fromelles on 19/20 July 1916. Pte Backhouse is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France with others who have no known grave.
