Studio portrait of 3682 Private (Pte) John Henry Baker, 58th Battalion from Footscray, Victoria. A 41 year old municipal employee prior to enlisting on 10 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements of the 7th Battalion from Melbourne on 23 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic. Following further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 58th Battalion, joining them in the field in France where he was killed in action near Fromelles on 15 July 1916. Pte Baker is buried in the Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
