Studio portrait of 467 Private (Pte) James Richard Baker, 38th Battalion from Wentworth, NSW. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 5 April 1916, he embarked for overseas service with A Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 20 July 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in November 1916. Pte Baker was wounded in action in France on 10 February 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment and recuperation. When he rejoined the 38th Battalion seven months later, they were serving in Belgium. Pte Baker was wounded in action at Zonnebeke Ridge, Belgium on 15 October and later died from his wounds on 20 October 1917. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
