Studio portrait of 8165 Private (Pte) John Thomas Barker, a stretcher bearer with the 2nd Field Ambulance from Northcote, Victoria. A 23 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 28 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the Special Reinforcements of the 2nd Australian General Hospital from Melbourne on 18 October 1915 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln. Following further training in Egypt and England, he proceeded to the Western Front where he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 20 September 1917. Pte Baker is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
