Portrait of 1318 Private (Pte) Alfred Ernest Barrett, labourer, of West Brunswick, Victoria who was one of four brothers to serve during the First World War. Pte Barrett enlisted in Melbourne on 27 October 1914 with 2nd Battalion AIF. He embarked on HMAT Seang Bee on 11 February 1915 for the Dardanelles. He was wounded in the right thigh on 2 August 1915 and was evacuated to No 1 Australian General Hospital, Cairo, for treatment and rehabilitation before rejoining his unit on 4 November 1915. The 2nd Battalion was relocated to the Fromelles area, France, in March 1916. Pte Barrett was killed in action on 25 July 1916 aged 25 years. His younger brother, Pte James Benjamin Barrett (see H05661) was killed at Pozieres a week earlier and his older brother Pte William John Barrett was killed in action at Fricourt, France, on 24 December 1916 (see H05662). The fourth brother, Frederick Albert had enlisted on 21 July 1915 at 16 years of age and was discharged on 10 December 1917.
