Portrait of 5A / 1102 Private (Pte) Francis Barter who enlisted in the 1st Infantry Brigade on 14 October 1914. A cook prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney on the Derfflinger on 5 April 1915 for the Gallipoli Peninsula and was transferred to the 3rd Battalion on 18 June 1915. He suffered from illness and was evacuated to England for a few months before rejoining his unit in Alexandria. The 3rd Battalion relocated to France and Pte Barter was killed in action near Pozieres between 22 and 27 July 1916. He has no known grave and is memorialised at the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery in France.
