Description

Portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (2 Lt) Thomas William Bartle, 69th Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. A schoolmaster of Castlemaine, Victoria, prior to enlistment in the 37th Battalion as a Private (Pte) on 14 March 1916, he was promoted to Corporal on 23 March 1916 based on his previous military service with the 55th and 65th Infantry, Citizens' Military Forces. He embarked on HMAT Persic in Melbourne on 3 June 1916 for Plymouth, England and was appointed Lance Sergeant on 27 October 1916 and was posted to the Royal Flying Corps, School of Military Aeronautics for pilot training. Thomas William Bartle was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and posted to the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) on 30 April 1917. 2 Lt Bartle was completing training with 69 Squadron AFC when he was killed as the result of an aircraft accident at Scampton aerodrome on 12 June 1917, aged 22 years.
