Portrait of 3239 Private (Pte) Benjamin Sydney Bent, tile layer, of South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted in the 14th Battalion on 5 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 11 Oct 1915 for Alexandria. The battalion was withdrawn from Gallipoli on 19 December 1915 and remained in the Alexandria area until 1 June 1916 when they relocated to France and the Western Front. Pte Bent was wounded in action near Mouquet Farm on 28 August 1916 and died of wounds in No 3 Casualty Clearing Station near Rouen, France, on 31 August 1916, aged 29 years.
