Portrait of 2108 Private (Pte) John William Best, cadet draftsman, of Petersham, New South Wales. He enlisted in the 1st Battalion on 25 February 1915 and embarked from Sydney on HMAT Karoola on 16 June 1915 for Gallipoli. Pte Best was killed in action at Gallipoli between 6 - 9 August 1915 aged 18 years. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Lone Pine Cemetery Memorial, Turkey.
