Studio portrait of 2292 Private (Pte) John Fielding Brown, 43rd Battalion, with a small white dog. A commercial traveller from Perth prior to enlistment on 13 May 1916, he embarked from Fremantle on 30 October 1916 for Devonport, England. He joined his battalion on the Western Front, France, during March 1916. Due to a fractured arm he spent time out of action from October 1917 before rejoining his unit on 5 March 1918. Pte Brown was wounded in action near Amiens, France, on 16 May 1918 and died of these wounds the following day in 20th Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 38 years.
