Description

Studio portrait of 1011 Corporal (Cpl) John Ernest Alexander Bruce, 24th Battalion. A carpenter from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales prior to enlistment in the Australian Naval and Military Expedition Force (AN&MEF) on 11 August 1914 he embarked from Sydney on 19 August 1914 on HMAT Berrima for New Guinea returning to Australia on 18 January 1915 at the expiration of enlistment. He then enlisted as a Private(Pte) in the 24th Battalion on 30 April 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on 10 May 1915 aboard HMAT Euripides for Gallipoli until the Battalion was withdrawn to Alexandria. The 24th Battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during March 1916. Pte Bruce was appointed Lance Corporal in September 1916 and promoted to Temporary Corporal in October 1916. Cpl Bruce was killed in action near Albert, France, on 25 February 1917. He was aged 31 years.
