Studio portrait of 5047 Private (Pte) John Alexander Buller, 14th Battalion. A sawmill hand from West Warburton, Victoria, on 6 January 1916 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises on 14 March 1916 for Egypt. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France during June 1916. Pte Buller was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 8 August 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was aged 24 years. His younger brother, 4758 Sergeant Arthur Alexander Buller, Bullecourt, France, on 11 May 1917 (see H06028) and his youngest brother, 3037 Pte Charles Edward Buller, died of wounds received in action near Ypres on 19 September 1917 (see H06026)
