Studio portrait of 4075 Private (Pte) Frederick William Bulling, 24th Battalion. A carpenter's apprentice from Prahran, Victoria, prior to enlistment on 15 December 1915 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916 for England. He joined his unit on the Western Front, France, on 5 August 1916. During the following twelve months he was hospitalised on two occasions due to illness and was evacuated to England on 17 April 1917 for treatment and recuperation. On 14 September he rejoined his unit in France. Pte Bulling was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, on 9 October 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was aged 19 years.
