Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Leslie James Burley, 3rd Battalion. A bank clerk of North Ryde, New South Wales, and with 18 months service in the 18th Infantry prior to enlistment, he embarked from Sydney on 11 February 1915 aboard HMAT Seang Choon for Egypt. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli on 17 May 1917. 2nd Lt Burley was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 19 May 1915 and died of these wounds the following day. He was aged 23 years.
