Studio portrait of 5351 Private (Pte) James Cornelius Burns, 59th Battalion. A labourer from Coburg, Victoria, he enlisted in the 7th Battalion on 14 February 1916 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916 for Suez where he transferred to the 59th Battalion on 24 May 1916. He was then hospitalised for three months with respiratory illness and was discharged for duty on 25 August 1916. Pte Burns sailed from Alexandria for training in Codford, England, before sailing to the Western Front, France. On arrival in France, he was again hospitalised for four months with respiratory illness before joining his battalion in France on 30 April 1917. Pte Burns was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 13 May 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 31 years.
