Description

Studio portrait of 814 Private (Pte) Frederick William Butler, 5th Battalion. A labourer of Yarram, Victoria, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orvieto on 24 August 1914 for Egypt. Pte Butler was wounded in action on the first occasion at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and was evacuated to Egypt and then returned to Australia for recuperation. He embarked aboard HMAT Ayrshire on 3 July 1916 for Plymouth, England before rejoining his battalion on the Western Front, France. Pte Butler was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium on 20 September 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was aged 23 years.
