Studio portrait of 3476 Private (Pte) Frank Joseph Butterworth, 4th Pioneer Battalion. A farmer of Bundaberg, Queensland, prior to enlistment in the 15th Battalion he embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Seang Bee on 21 October 1915 for Egypt. He was transferred to the 47th Battalion and then to the 4th Pioneer Battalion during March 1916. In June 1916 his unit relocated to the Western Front, France. Pte Butterworth was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 4 August 1916. He was aged 22 years.
