Studio portrait of 2129 Private (Pte) William Cargill, 4th Battalion from Ithaca, Queensland. A 21 year old labourer with previous service in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force at Rabaul in 1914, he enlisted in the AIF on 8 April 1915 and embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 4th Battalion from Sydney on 16 June 1915 aboard HMAT Karoola. After joining the battalion at Gallipoli on 4 August, he was killed in action at Lone Pine between 6 and 9 August 1915. Pte Cargill is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
