Studio portrait of 1004 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Francis George Carnell, 4th Battalion from Neutral Bay, NSW shown wearing the campaign medal ribbons from his previous service in the Boer War. A 45 year old station manager prior to enlisting in the AIF on 5 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with C Company from Sydney on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Euripides (A14). While serving with the battalion at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action at Lone Pine on 7 August 1915. After being evacuated to a hospital ship, he died three days later and was buried at sea. L Cpl Carnell is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
