Studio portrait of 11936 Driver Alfred John Carpenter, 46th Battery, 12th Field Artillery Brigade from Irrewillipe, Victoria. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlistment on 3 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 14th Reinforcements of the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column from Melbourne on 28 January 1916 aboard HMAT Themistocles. He died from complications following appendicitis in the hospital at Rouen, France on 9 December 1916 and is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen.
