Description
Studio portrait of 4452 Private (Pte) William Chambers Gilbert Carr, 58th Battalion from Dereel, Victoria. An 18 year old farm labourer prior to enlisting on 23 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 14th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 January 1916. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 58th Battalion and went with them to France in June. Pte Carr was wounded in action in the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July and later died in hospital from his wounds on 31 July 1916. He is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Lille, France.
