Portrait of 2591 Private (Pte) John Cavanagh, 3rd Battalion from Goulburn, NSW. A 23 year old musician prior to enlisting on 26 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 6th Reinforcements of the 19th Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 4th Battalion and then to the 3rd Battalion and went with them to France in March 1916. He was reported missing in action, presumed killed sometime between 22 and 27 July 1916 at Pozieres, France and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
