Studio portrait of 1068 Private (Pte) William John Clark, 26th Battalion from New Norfolk, Tasmania. An 18 year old labourer with prior service in the 92nd Australian Infantry Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 6 April 1915, he embarked for overseas service with D Company from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 29 June 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, the battalion underwent further training before landing at Gallipoli on 12 September. Pte Clark was killed in action on 19 November 1915 and buried in the Ari Burnu Cemetery (at the northern end of Anzac Cove), Gallipoli, Turkey.
