Description

Studio portrait of 3292 Private Arthur James Clayden, 7th Battalion from Northcote, Melbourne, Victoria. A 32 year old bookmaker prior to enlisting on 19 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915. Shortly after arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 59th Battalion in February and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 10 May 1916. In June he proceeded with the 59th Battalion to France where he was wounded in action during the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916. After being evacuated to England for further medical treatment, he died from his wounds on 25 July 1916 and was buried in the Kensal Green (All Souls) Cemetery, London, UK.
