Description

Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Cecil Cleary, 18th Battalion from Stanmore, NSW. A 22 year old clerk prior to enlistment on 14 April 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 142) with the 18th Battalion Machine Gun Section from Sydney on 25 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was promoted to Corporal on 22 January 1917 and then to (2nd Lt) on 28 June 1917. He was killed in action on 20 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
