Description

Portrait of 2363 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) Gerald Arthur Collett, 3rd Anzac Camel Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps from Newcastle, NSW. A 28 year old public accountant with two years previous service with the Militia Australian Corps of Signallers prior to enlisting in the AIF on 27 November 1916, he embarked for overseas service as an A/Cpl (for the voyage only) with the February 1917 Reinforcements from Sydney aboard RMS Morea on 17 February 1917. After disembarking in Egypt, he reverted to the rank of Private but shortly thereafter was appointed an A/Cpl again. While serving in the Middle East, a bomb was dropped on his position near Sheik Nuran, Palestine and he was killed on 5 June 1917. He was buried near where he fell but after the war, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel with others who have no known grave.
