Studio portrait of 1702 Acting Corporal Henry James Constable, 22nd Battalion from Auburn, Victoria. A 43 year old commercial traveler prior to enlistment on 21 May 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on 16 July 1915 aboard HMAT Demosthenes. On arrival in Egypt, he reverted to the rank of Private but was promoted to Lance Corporal the next day, 27 August 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on the serve on the Western Front where he was killed in action on 27 July 1916 near Pozieres, France and is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boisselle, France.
