Description

Portrait of 3027 Private (Pte) Alfred Lionel Cooper, 47th Battalion from Pittsworth, Queensland. A 19 year old farmer with 12 months service in the Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 9 August 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 7th Reinforcements of the 25th Battalion from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Itonus (A50) on 30 December 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 47th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. He was wounded in action at Pozieres on 8 August 1916 and died from his wounds in the 12th General Hospital at Rouen. Pte Cooper is buried in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
